What is Liezhibu

A plain weave of cotton warp and recycled cloth-strip weft

Liezhibu is a traditional household fabric passed down among Dai families: worn clothing and bedding are torn into even strips to serve as weft, woven with cotton warp on a traditional loom. It grew from the frugality of materially leaner times — making the most of what was available — rather than a commercial luxury tradition.

Its uses shifted across generations: once mainly bedding, padding, agricultural cover, insulation wrapping and a traditional dowry item consumed within households, it has recently been adapted into cushions, mats, wall hangings, bags and small cultural-creative objects for tourism.

Weave: a plain weave without pattern tablets; it values warp-and-weft density and hand-feel rather than elaborate jacquard motifs.
Cycle: weaving a single standard piece on the loom takes several days; including spinning, sizing, drying and finishing, the full process takes days to about a week and depends heavily on weather, as sized yarn can mildew in damp weather.
Material: mainly strips torn from worn pure-cotton fabrics, keeping cotton’s softness and durability; natural yellowing and light wear marks are part of its recycled character.
Quality cues: denser warp and tighter interlacing make a sturdier cloth that resists fraying; loose, sparsely woven new cloth tends to shed threads. Judge density and hand-feel before colour.
Do not confuse Liezhibu with Dai brocade (Daijin): brocade uses full cotton warp with pattern tablets for intricate motifs, a refined jacquard craft; Liezhibu uses recycled-strip weft in a plain, tablet-free weave. They share a loom but differ in purpose, motif logic and difficulty, and should not be labelled interchangeably.

Weaving process

From old cloth to new cloth: a slow sequence of steps

The sequence below is compiled from oral accounts of several interviewed weavers and workshop owners to explain the craft logic; the detailed order varies among makers.

1

Prepare and process the old cloth

Collect discarded old clothes and bedding, wash them and tear into even strips; heavier cloth is cut finer, then bound to avoid tangling. Preparing and gathering the strips already takes substantial time.

2

Spin, size and dry the warp

The cotton warp is sized and dried to stay firm for threading; this step depends on good weather, as sized yarn can dampen and mildew in wet seasons — a key constraint imposed by nature.

3

Plain weave on the loom

Treadles open the warp shed as the weaver passes cloth-strip weft by weft into a cloth. Skilled elders move steadily, yet each piece still takes several days of repeated raising and lowering and demands considerable physical effort.

4

Finishing, selvedges and use

Once woven, edges are trimmed and locked to prevent the weft from loosening; pieces may be cut for bedding, padding, soft furnishings or bags, with firm selvedges and minimal cuts preserving durability.

A few village makers still dye naturally by boiling leaves and plants rather than using chemical dyes; the warm, small-batch results are a scarce differentiating craft, yet this value currently receives little adequate market premium.

Stories of transmission

Conditions of five respondents, presented by role

To protect privacy, the accounts below are narrated by role without real names, shop names or addresses; they come from oral field interviews and focus on how different actors regard the craft, the market and livelihood.

Returned workshop owner: treating the craft as shared heritage

Open-sharing model · Design and sales organizer · Municipal level-4 heritage bearer

Taking over the family cloth business about a decade ago, she first focused on improving Dai brocade and built up Liezhibu stock through steady collection of old textiles. She registers no private trademark, viewing Liezhibu as shared Dai cultural heritage; she handles design and markets while partnering senior local weavers focus on making, in a stable division of labor. She advocates steady pricing to avoid hype and sudden decline, and welcomes peers to grow the category together so that weavers earn a fair, predictable income; weaving experiences serve to explain the physical intensity of handwork to the public.

“One person cannot do it all; better to carry it on together.”

Curated-shop owner: quality over quantity

Quality-first model · Honest fixed pricing · Against fabricated hype

In bulk buying she selects only a few pieces meeting hand-feel and aesthetic standards, offering better purchase terms for quality to encourage better workmanship. The shop prices honestly for all customers and openly opposes invented “century-old” stories and casual heritage labels. She holds that if weaving returns persistently fall below migrant wages, the craft cannot continue naturally; she keeps away from mass e-commerce and live-streaming to avoid rapid copying, relying mainly on in-store experience and repeat-customer trust.

“First make the piece worth its price; then see whether customers buy.”

Established dealer: judging by cloth quality, rejecting inferior new cloth

Long-standing dealer · Identification and finishing · Custom orders without extra markup

With long-standing taste and inventory ahead of the trend, this dealer sources mainly old cloth from nearby villages and custom-made new cloth, with fixed finishing staff. Pricing follows density, condition and craft; neither overcharging nor accepting loose, sparsely warped new cloth that frays easily. Cutting minimizes edges to protect the weft, and custom selection carries no extra processing fee. She judges that top-grade old cloth is finite, and the long-term path lies in making high-quality new cloth to old-cloth craft standards.

“The cloth speaks for itself; poorly made cloth does not last.”

Senior village weavers: steady labor at the treadle loom

Main producing group · Elderly practitioners · Witnesses of the transmission gap

Actual on-loom weaving is mostly done by women in their seventies and eighties, who start early and need several days of repeated raising and lowering per standard piece; preparing strips and gathering material also takes time. Skilled but individually limited in output, they face higher daily wages outside the village; most young people leave, and complex narrow-band traditional patterns have few successors. Visitors often find the experience novel and enjoyable but cannot sustain the physical effort; a brief trial does not equal willingness to pursue weaving long-term.

“Cloth is woven shuttle by shuttle; it cannot be rushed, and it is tiring.”

Natural-dye makers: keeping the old plant-dye practice

Natural plant dyeing · Firm weave · Weak market access

Having woven for decades, she dyes with locally boiled plant leaves and refuses chemical dyes; using mainly old household textiles, she makes well-matched, firm pieces laid in matched sets without stitching. Her work earns strong trust among knowledgeable buyers, yet she generally does not use Mandarin, smartphones or mobile payment; finished pieces are mainly collected and resold by local middlemen, so the premium of the distinctive craft is diluted along the chain and rarely reaches the maker directly.

“Colour comes from boiled leaves, not from a chemical bucket.”

Value chain and business models

A chain woven in villages and transacted in shops

Current circulation runs roughly through four stages; reading this chain clarifies value distribution and the challenges of transmission.

Weaving carries the longest labor yet sits at the chain’s base with little pricing power, while selection, aesthetics and sales capture more of the market premium. Without stable division of labor and direct channels, trend-driven gains may not reach weavers effectively. Established dealers mostly buy outright rather than consign goods, since consignment carries an irreversible risk of damaging old cloth.

Open-sharing model

Keeps the category open without a private brand, dividing labor to support multiple weavers and stabilizing prices against hype; it broadens influence and sustains makers, but lacks exclusive branding and depends heavily on reputation and inventory.

Quality-first model

Strict selection, honest fixed prices and rejection of loose inferior cloth, with some no-markup custom choices; it builds trust and narrows information gaps, but its scale is constrained under low-price competition.

Natural-craft differentiation

Plant dyeing and firm workmanship are scarce selling points aligned with the green-circular narrative; the strength is distinctiveness, while the weakness is weak direct access, limited bargaining power and premiums squeezed by middlemen.

Circular value and common myths

Accurate storytelling of frugal reuse matters more than hype

Where its circular value lies

Reclaiming textiles that would otherwise be discarded and rewoven extends material lifespans, embodying the frugal, circular making wisdom developed over generations; it also offers flexible, accessible work for elderly women, linking craft, livelihood and community. Environmental benefits here remain qualitative only: this survey has not measured carbon reduction or resource savings, and uses no unmeasured percentages or emissions figures.

Why public science communication matters

Public communication often fixates on retro aesthetics and photo appeal, weakening the cultural core of material reuse, while buyers struggle to tell craft grades, material age and dye method apart. Neutral, public-facing explainer content on grades and responsible appreciation serves long-term health of the sector better than marketing slogans alone.

Myth 1: “Hundred-year cloth” is everywhere
Liezhibu was traditionally an everyday household textile; natural cotton and linen rarely survive a century without proper conservation. Most interviewed pieces are decades old, genuinely ancient examples are scarce, and “century-old” is often marketing packaging. Buyers should weigh density, condition and provenance rather than year claims.
Myth 2: Liezhibu equals Dai brocade
The looms are similar, but Dai brocade is a refined jacquard using full warp and pattern tablets, whereas Liezhibu is tablet-free plain weave with recycled-strip weft; they differ in craft and use and should not be promoted as the same concept.
Myth 3: All Liezhibu should be labelled “intangible heritage”
Only a few bearers hold formal heritage recognition; an entire category of goods should not carry the label. Public messaging should distinguish traditional craft and local culture from officially designated “intangible cultural heritage” items.
Myth 4: Naturally reused cloth automatically comes with quantified green benefits
Reuse is a positive direction, but specific water, carbon and resource savings require dedicated measurement; until data exist, describe it qualitatively as traditional circular wisdom and frugal reuse.

Responsible appreciation and support

Read the craft, respect the labor

What to check when buying

  • 先摸经纬密度与紧实度,轻扯边缘看是否容易散线;
  • 区分老布与新布、植物染与化学染,要求清楚说明来源;
  • 把自然泛黄、轻微使用痕迹视为再生特征,而非瑕疵;

Feel warp density and firmness, gently tug edges for fraying; distinguish old from new cloth and plant dye from chemical dye, and ask for clear provenance. Treat natural patina as a recycled trait, and be wary of exaggerated age, vague craft claims and slogan-like promotion.

How to view hands-on experiences

  • 体验的价值是感知时间与体力成本,提升对实物的理解;
  • 短期“好玩”不等于愿意长期从事高强度织造;

The value of a trial is to feel the time and physical cost behind a piece, not to create a professional weaver; brief enjoyment does not mean willingness to sustain demanding weaving, and experience tourism should not be equated with transmission of the craft.

More sustainable ways to support

  • 优先选择明码实价、如实介绍工艺的渠道;
  • 把价格理解为手工劳动与选材的回报,而非单纯“情怀溢价”;
  • 关注公共调研与科普内容,理解链条全貌;

Prefer transparent sellers who describe the craft honestly; read price as compensation for handwork and material choice rather than mere sentiment premium; follow neutral research and explainer content; in the long run, stable, dignified earnings for weavers are the key to continuity.
